Part 1 of the “Young Generation’s Guide to Creating What Truly Matters” blog series

In a world where young people feel tremendous anxiety about their future, the most powerful act of hope begins with something surprisingly simple: truly listening to understand their story. Through my decades of walking alongside others on their journey of self-discovery, I’ve learned that when we create space for authentic dialogue about our deepest fears, we also open the door to our greatest potential for transformation.

Life is a curious journey, isn’t it? The challenges facing younger generations today are unlike anything we’ve witnessed before. As I watch the news and engage with young people, I’m struck by the unique blend of awareness and anxiety they carry on their shoulders.

This is the first blog in the series titled “Young Generation’s Guide to Creating What Truly Matters” which addresses young people’s concerns about their future while offering practical guidance for transformation. Each blog in the series in intended to create a framework of understanding to inspire a shift in perspective and empower young people to create meaningful change and rewrite their own story.

The Reality of Young People’s Concerns

The weight of our current world situation falls heavily on the younger generations. When I listen to what they have to say, what emerges isn’t just typical youthful uncertainty about the future. Their concerns reflect genuine crossroads humanity faces ― climate change that threatens to reshape the planet they’ll inherit, economic systems that seem increasingly stacked against them, and social structures that feel resistant to meaningful change.

These aren’t abstract worries. These are very real questions:

  • “How do I balance my need for meaningful work and financial stability?”
  • “What career path do I choose — job security or chase my dream?”
  • “Will my job be secure?”
  • “Will I ever be able to afford a house, or retire some day?”
  • “Is it responsible to have children given the state of the world?”
  • “What’s the point of planning for a future that feels so precarious?”

What’s different about today’s young people is that they’ve grown up with an awareness of these global challenges. Unlike previous generations who could dream without certain boundaries, many young people today feel they’re starting their adult lives in a game where the rules seem rigged against them.

Listening Without Dismissing

One of the most important things I’ve learned in my life’s journey is the power of truly listening. When someone feels genuinely heard, something shifts in their experience ― a space opens up where new possibilities can emerge.

Too often, when young people express anxiety about their future, they’re met with dismissive responses:

  • “Every generation thinks the world is ending.”
  • “You just need to work harder than we did.”
  • “You’ll figure it out, eventually.”

These responses, however well-intended, miss something crucial. The concerns of today’s young people aren’t just uninformed fears ― they’re often based on careful observation and deep caring about more than just their personal futures.

The Mirror of Awareness

In life, our external experiences often serve as mirrors reflecting our internal state. Similarly, the anxiety young people feel about the future mirrors genuine challenges in our collective choices and systems.

When they express hopelessness about affording a home, finding meaningful work, or living in a stable climate, they’re holding up a mirror to the systems that have often prioritized short-term gains over long-term wellbeing. Their concerns aren’t complaints ― they’re reflections of reality that deserve acknowledgment.

What’s remarkable is how many young people maintain hope despite these challenges. When given the space to fully express both their fears and visions, many reveal incredibly creative ideas for what could be ― new economic models, new ways of living in community, new relationships with the Earth.

Creating Space for Transformation

The first step in addressing young people’s anxiety isn’t offering quick solutions or dismissive reassurance. Creating a space where their concerns can be fully expressed and witnessed is key. Only then can we move toward exploring how individual choices connect to collective change.

This is something I’ve observed repeatedly in my life ― that when we allow ourselves and others to fully acknowledge reality, even hard realities, we create the necessary foundation for transformation. Acknowledging challenges isn’t surrendering to despair ― it’s the essential first step toward meaningful change.

Every one of us matters in this journey. While none of us can single-handedly solve the global challenges we face, each of us has a unique role to play in creating the future. By starting with honest listening and acknowledgment, we create the conditions where hope can take root and grow.

Reflection Questions

  • What concerns about the future weigh most heavily on your mind? How often do you feel that people truly hear and acknowledge these concerns?
  • When you express anxiety about the future, what responses have been helpful to you? What responses have made you feel dismissed?
  • In what ways might your concerns about the future actually reflect your deepest values and what you care most about?
  • What spaces in your life allow for the honest expression of both fears and hope?
  • If you could imagine one change that would give you more hope for the future, what would it be?
