Anxiety and Depression in Gen Zs

These are genuine challenges, which create deep anxiety in Gen Zs, and the statistics are alarming. In 2025, 40‒60% of Gen Zs reported experiencing anxiety most of the time. The main reasons for this alarming rate — social anxiety, economic uncertainty and academic pressure.
From a holistic perspective, I can tell you this — when issues that cause anxiety are not addressed, they can lead to depression. The statistics of depression in Gen Zs are equally alarming. In 2025, nearly 42% of Gen Zs struggle with depression. The main reasons for this alarming rate — economic instability, social media pressures, academic pressure and global crisis.
While these numbers are cause for alarm, I have good reasons to be optimistic for you, Zoomers. When you understand the root causes, you can take action to stop the anxiety, and even overcome the depression.
Anxiety as a Messenger

Anxiety is an emotion and it serves a powerful purpose. Think of it as your body’s early warning system.
As a Zoomer, you may be feeling a general unease, but you can’t quite put your finger on it. Or you may be feeling uneasy about sudden changes or uncertainties in areas of your life. Chances are you may not be fully aware of the reasons behind these, and what to do about it. This triggers anxiety.
It’s easy to view the anxiety itself as a “problem”, and miss the message behind it. Anxiety’s message — “stop and take a deeper look at what’s troubling you, so you can take action to empower yourself.”
In the next blog posts, I will discuss the root causes behind each challenge so you can empower yourself.
Some Quick-Relief Tools
But first, some effective quick-relief tools for anxiety:
- Deep breathing to calm your mind, emotions and feelings.
- Quiet walks in Nature to calm and center yourself.
- Regular exercise, such as running, walking, or swimming. These can release tension in the body and mild levels of anxiety.
- Journaling or other forms of expression. It helps you become aware of deep unresolved emotions and feelings so you can take action to address them properly. Journaling also allows you to see if you are stuck in a mental perspective and need to reframe.
- Talk out what you are feeling. Find a suitable support system, such as a trusted friend, family member, or counsellor.
- Meditation to ground and find your centered space within.
